Have a Stakeholder Meeting? - 5 Tips to Communicate Effectively as a Data Scientist


As a Data Scientist, time to time, we had meetings with Stakeholders that consists of business leaders, executives, domain experts, and data scientists. A stakeholder meeting is a crucial one where a data scientist will have claim facts and explainations on they analysis, recommendations, and predictions.


In order to have the meetings productive and to communicate effectively, these are the 5 tips to keep in mind while preparing for a meeting.


 

Give Illustrations:


We all hear the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words", similarly having a pictorial representations will help data scientist to get the interest and attention of the leaders. They give a clear and consise representation of what your analysis/model built and its results.


Start from data collection, preparation, cleaning, model building, business rules and the final results - all can be conveyed with just one picture.


 


Simple Way To Show Value Of Your Work:


Executives, Business Leaders, and Domain Experts are all busy people. Getting to meet them is a rare opportunity and when you get one meeting, make sure its well used. Having to explain the project details in terms of technical concepts is a "Big No".


We should always try to relate our technical concept to a very simple real life examples or definitions to explain the value of work. This way the meeting will have profound effect and may lead to making business decisions.


 


Anticipate Expectations & Questions To Be Addressed:


Meeting with stakeholders, business experts are so important that you need to be prepared on how the meeting will go. Perparation is the key here. Always try to make an effort on getting to know what the leaders expections are, such as, are they tech savvy? If so, what are the level of their data science understanding.


This will help with how depth the data scientist needs to be prepared. For example, if you are building a time series forecasting and you have trial and tested several models, always keep an explaination on why you tested the specific model and what led to selection of the best model. This can help a leader who is a tech savvy to understand the nuances of the model section process.


 

These three tips will go a long way. These tips will make a great communication strategies that can lead to better results. However, communicating with stakeholders and other business leaders is an uphill for a lifetime. You need to keep on learning and equip yourself with the preparations needed as per the prior meeting discussions.
