THE MAKING OF A MANAGER - BOOK BY JULIE ZHUO - BOOK REVIEW

Hi Everyone, After a month gap, here I am with another book review. This time it is a bit different book and all about how you can upskill yourself to be a "Manager".

Before going to the review, I would also like to convey that I have this review in a video format and can be watched at the link here.

Now, let's get started with the review:

INTRODUCTION:

First and foremost, Let's have the author's introduction “Julie Zhuo”. She was the VP of Product Design at Facebook and is now a Co-Founder at Inspirit. Bit of a flashback, In May 2006, Zhuo became the 1st intern at Facebook. She became manager at the age of 25. She wrote the book & published it in 2019.

The book consists a total of 276 pages inclusive of acknowledgment & references. There are about 10 chapters where in each chapter easily transitions to one another.

She starts the book by explaining the very purpose of the book. And then to the chapters…

Chapters 1 to 10:

  • Chapter 1 is all about how a “great manager is made" and not born. In this chapter, she conveys the message by asking 3 questions:

    • Do I like talking with people?

    • Can I provide stability for an emotionally challenging situation?

    • Do I find it more motivating to achieve a particular outcome or to play a specific role?

  • Chapter 2 is about 3 ways an employee gets moved to a Managerial position. She explains the pros and cons and how to handle it.

  • Chapter 3 is about “Leading a small team” whereas Chapter 9 is about “Leading a growing team” wherein she goes from explaining the tips on handling both a small team as well as a growing team.

  • Chapter 4, 6,7, and 8 is all about the feedback, meetings, hiring, and making things happen. These chapters serve as the responsibility of a manager and honing the skills for the benefit of the team members & organization.

  • Chapter 5 is about managing the manager where she basically signifies the importance of looking after not only the team but also themselves. She lists on steps she took to manage herself and what has come out of it.

  • Chapter 10 is about “Culture & Diversity” and most parts of it were related to how she managed to handle culture & diversity within the Facebook organization.

REVIEW TIME:

  • I totally like the Intro on why she wrote the book in the first place,

  • The chapters had a pattern. For example, she starts by explaining her early years as a manager managing a small team and growing to lead a big team which signifies how she has grown into an excellent manager herself.

  • Chapter 5 is my favorite because she explains the importance of a manager to manage him/her and states the fact that it's also his/her responsibility to manage their strengths & weakness in addition to the team.

  • The doddles in front of every first page of the chapter are fun and interesting. This shows her creativity as a product design VP.

  • Finally, as she also speaks about the culture & diversity, I felt she has covered an important section of handling a part of the organization as a leader herself.

My total recommendation is that this book motivated me to do better in my current job, if not more. And the book totally deserves a 5-star review.

That's all my friends to this review. I hope you liked the review and if so, please like, share, and subscribe to my blog for similar reviews. Until next month, Happy Reading!
